Unit tests exercise the smallest verifiable behavior: pure functions, isolated classes, and modules with dependencies replaced by test doubles (fakes, stubs, mocks). Good suites are fast, deterministic, and readable, with names that read like specifications.
Design tests around arrange / act / assert, prefer table-driven cases for combinatorial behavior, and measure coverage as a guide—not a goal in isolation. Pair coverage with mutation or code review to catch “assertions that never fail.”
